Samantha’s Story-

Last year was an amazingly unique year for students and staff.  As the students moved to classes online and tried to develop art projects without knowing what supplies students were able to have access to, it was wonderful to see the ability of the students to use what they had at home.

Students designed and created some wonderful works of art during this time that helped encourage positive artistic expression and behaviors.  Two students, in particular, did an amazing job at working together on a 5x5 foot painting for the Midland Community Centers Preschool Class.  This class is taught by a former Bullock Creek student Rachel Helmreich (Northard).  Rachel had contacted the Art Department and asked if any students could help with creating a painting on their wall that would brighten up the Preschool Library area.  When this idea was presented to Samantha Jean and Avery Spalding, they jumped at the opportunity.  They took into consideration the age level of their audience and designed an image that they felt supported a welcoming environment for the students to want to come and read with the characters in their painting.  The painting was delivered at the end of the second semester and the preschool students sent back a letter of appreciation to our two high school artists.

Pushing the concept of the library further this year, Samantha Jean has created an entire story developing the characters of the original painting and an age-appropriate lesson.  Samantha illustrated her story on our new ipads in class with a drawing app and an apple pen.  We were able to print those pages professionally and she designed a tactile felt cover of the characters for the students to interact with the story even more.  Samantha’s drawing skills allowed her to put so many small intricate details into her pictures that allows the story to develop the preschool students.  The storybook was delivered at the end of November and we can not wait to hear the Preschool Students' reactions.   Here is a sneak peek of Samantha’s story.
